Bee Products: Discover the Power of Nature
Beeswax - Nature's Protective Barrier
How is Beeswax Produced?
Beeswax (Cera alba) is a remarkable natural wax produced by young worker honeybees. It’s secreted as tiny, clear scales from special wax glands located on the underside of their abdomens. The bees carefully manipulate these scales with their legs, bring them to their mouths, chew and soften them with saliva, and then meticulously mold the wax to construct the hexagonal cells of their honeycomb. This intricate structure is used to store honey, pollen, and royal jelly, and to raise their young.
Properties and Historical Significance
A truly miraculous natural product, beeswax has been valued since antiquity. It was used for:
- Treating skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
- Healing wounds and burns.
- Creating early forms of cosmetics and ointments. Today, pure beeswax, like that harvested from our hives in Crete, is sought after for cosmetics, baby care products, soaps, and more. Its key properties include:
- Anti-inflammatory, Antiseptic, Antibacterial: Helps soothe irritation and prevent infection.
- Emollient & Humectant: Softens and hydrates the skin.
- Protective Barrier: Forms a breathable layer on the skin that locks in moisture without clogging pores.
The Beauty of Natural Beeswax Candles
Candles made from 100% pure beeswax offer unique advantages:
- Brighter, Cleaner Burn: They burn more brightly and cleanly than paraffin candles, with a steady, non-flickering flame and minimal smoke or soot.
- Natural Aroma: Emit a subtle, warm, natural honey scent, ideal for those sensitive to strong artificial fragrances.
- Air Purifying? It’s believed that burning beeswax releases negative ions, which can help neutralize airborne pollutants like dust, pollen, and odors. Some report improvement in allergy or asthma symptoms.
- Longer Lasting: Beeswax has a higher melting point than other waxes, meaning beeswax candles burn significantly longer.
- Natural & Renewable: A completely natural, non-toxic, and renewable resource.
Other Versatile Uses for Cretan Beeswax
Beyond candles and skincare, beeswax is incredibly versatile:
- Lubricant: For drawers, zippers, and tools.
- Waterproofing: Can be used to waterproof fabrics or leather.
- Polishing: Excellent for polishing wood furniture and conditioning leather.
- Crafts: Used in encaustic painting (hot wax painting), batik, and other artistic mediums.
- Food Coating: Food-grade beeswax (ensure purity) can be used to coat cheese or seal jars.
